The Ski Club of South Africa was formed around 1935 with the primary aim of skiing in the Hex River Mountains above Worcester in the Cape. Dennis Brimble and Leland Bybee were founder members although a Mr Pells and Mr Hofmeyer had skiied on Fonteintjiesberg in the 1920's.
The club has a closed membership of some 250 members and new members are only admitted after completing work parties (!) before being added to a lengthy waiting list. This is necessitated by the fact that the skiing facilities are limited and the pressure on the environment is a sensitive issue. Added to that is the fact that the ski slopes that hold snow are on private land and it is only with the consent of the local farmers that access is allowed.
